There are distinctions between managers and leaders. Leader has vision, power, and skills to affect change in an organization while managers ensure the efficiency and effectiveness in the use of resources to achieve goals and visions set forth by leader. If you follow the news lately you might not missed this interesting episode of presidential politics. When asked by Joe Scarborough how does he feel about Russian President, Vladimir Putin intimidating or even killing journalists who has opposite view from him, Donald Trump’s response was, "He's running his country, and at least he's a leader," Trump replied. "Unlike what we have in this country" (Campbell, 2015). The suggestions that Mr. Obama who doesn’t like to project military power but relies more on soft power of diplomacy as not a real leader is interesting and debatable. It is also a good demonstration of different view and perception about leadership and leadership style. This view about leadership is also exists in business. For instance, some managers like the former CEO of GE, Jack Welch who championed the lean and mean style of management by letting go any business manager whose performance is amongst the lowest 20% or any business unit that is not in the top 2 in its industry or Steve Jobs of Apple who was very well known for his top down management style are in the category of leaders that Mr. Trump thinks as a real leader. These kind of leaders prefer to use extrinsic motivation to reward, coercive and reward as sources of power (Jones & George, 2015, p. 333), and top down management style. On another side of the spectrum, managers like Mr. Hsieh of Zappos and the new CEO of Apple Mr. Tim Cook are more incline to use intrinsic motivation, expert and referent sources of power, focus on relationships with subordinates, and empower subordinate to do their jobs. Essentially there is no right or wrong type of leadership, however, good and effective leaders are those that know how to use the combination of the two styles when needed. When the topic of leadership is discussed one almost always run into the age-old debate of nature vs. nurture. Is leader born or trained? This description provides you a lot of concepts and theories on leaderships and motivation. I would focus on the intrinsic vs. extrinsic types of motivation and the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs which are both very useful to understand the nature of human motivation. Leader has vision, power, and skills to affect change in an organization while managers ensure the efficiency and effectiveness in the use of resources to achieve goals and visions set forth by leader. Your task in this session is to explain how leaders motivate people to follow their visions and to identify leadership style of a leader you know. Here are the two tasks.
