We are getting to a point in art history where we have to talk about art in a different way than before. There’s a lot involved in the process and the intention of the art that isn’t always clearly identified. Let’s talk about that process of trying to figure out what abstract art is all about. After going through this Unit, do you think you could go to a modern art museum and try to understand what’s going on? Do you think you have the tools needed to ask the right questions, look for the right clues, and understand something new?

The global attitudes after the years of Depression and World Wars shifted out of its negativism, and moved into a trend of stability, baby-boomers, and consumerism. The center of the art world has moved out of Paris and into the Unites States, starting in New York City. Artists began experimentation in the creative process in an extremely diversified way, realizing they could move out of using traditional media for creating art.

In the contemporary atmosphere, artists explore painting as well as using found objects, remnants of modern civilizations, the environment and performance to invent new interpretations of what art really is, and what it is supposed to do for society as a whole.
