In “Stranger in the Village,” Baldwin’s statement about the trap of history seems to explain the prejudiced and racist ways of the people of the village who represent Western history. We can see that other people, very different than Baldwin, have been caught in the same trap.

Write a paper in which you try to answer the question of the Topic Box above—the problem of prejudice and racism as a trap for others and ourselves. First write several sentences about prejudice and racism, connecting these problem to the idea of a “trap.” For two or three sentences, think about Baldwin’s experience as it related to him back then and to us today (introduction). Then make a statement about Baldwin and someone else you’ve read about (Shane Johnson or Jose Antonio Vargas): What do their struggles show us in terms of the question of the Topic Box? (thesis)

After your introduction , continue with about two detailed paragraphs about Baldwin: How does Baldwin show the truth of the statement, “People are trapped in history and history is trapped in them”? How does he walk out of that trap—and into better encounters with others? In your opinion, what encounters in the text help him to understand others? Also, what encounters does he “imagine” that help him to think differently of himself and of the future of all Americans?

After these paragraphs, keep writing : Now look at the person you’re using to compare to Baldwin (either Shane Johnson or Jose Antonio Vargas). How is this person’s experience of exclusion similar to Baldwin’s experience in the Swiss village? What are the important encounters and experiences that this person has that play a role in his or her changed understanding? What’s interesting to you about the process of going from “A” (“before”) to “B” (“after”)?

Then write another paragraph in which you bring Baldwin and your comparison person together —Keep comparing them, or contrasting them, sentence by sentence, back and forth. Try to make interesting connections.
