Reasoning is a powerful tool of the mind but strong concrete evidence should be the cornerstone of logic. Logic is the language of the conscious mind whereas emotions are reactions to perceived and imagined stimuli based on one’s personal experience and not logic. Emotions often outweigh logic.

Daniel Goleman in his book, Emotional Intelligence, asserts that understanding emotion is more pertinent to leading a successful life than having a high intelligence. More often, people of high IQ struggle at work because of their weakness in fundamental human relation skills, which he called emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence largely determines our success in relationships, work and even physical wellness. Emotional intelligence is a type of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use the information to guide one’s thinking and actions. It includes emotional management, social skills, empathy, self-awareness and personal motivation.

In logic, we have to analyze all factors and evidence of a certain point or situation but it is through the heart that we are able to express it to other people and either get their support or turn them away. Evidence works best when it is suited to the audience and their experience.

When persuading someone, emotions provide a spring board for a successful execution of an argument. Emotion is a power we harness and use in persuasion. Logic is important but emotion helps catapult an otherwise dull or boring exchange to the next level. In persuasion, it is important to control the negative emotions while constructing positive emotions since it is important to ensure that a message does not end with negative feelings. It is always important to pay attention to surrounding circumstances of a presentation when using emotions in persuasions.
