'It's going to be nasty out there': Ontario bracing for 'potentially damaging' winter storm expected to peak as Christmas weekend begins
Travellers are being warned to prepare for a "major winter storm" which is set to hit Toronto, along with much of Ontario and Quebec on Thursday and last through the Christmas weekend.
The storm, which could include "blizzard conditions" for some areas, will arrive in Ontario Thursday with the most wintry conditions expected from midday Friday into Saturday, just in time for one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
"Precipitation may begin as rain or snow late Thursday before transitioning to rain in many areas Thursday night. Temperatures are expected to plummet on Friday leading to a potential flash freeze for locations that receive rainfall," Environment Canada said in a special weather statement Wednesday.
The national weather agency said that rapidly falling temperatures will then be accompanied by "strong to potentially damaging winds" on Friday, along with snow that could be heavy at times.
"Blizzard conditions are possible late Friday into the weekend for areas downwind of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay," the statement, said. Lake effect snow could follow for several days in areas east of the Great Lakes.
TRAVEL CONDITIONS MAY BECOME DANGEROUS
With the storm expected to peak as thousands of people are travelling for the Christmas long weekend, those who are able to do so are being advised to adjust their travel plans in order to avoid the inclement weather.
"The winds will get incredibly strong Friday afternoon, evening, and overnight and that will likely create blizzard conditions that will only gradually abate on Saturday so if you have any travel plans between mid-morning Friday and midday Saturday, I implore you to adjust them to avoid that stretch because it's going to be nasty out there," CP24 Meteorologist Bill Coulter said. "It's not going to be the most snow we're not in the sweet spot for snow but even five to 10 centimeters with wind gusts at 90 kilometres per hour is going to be ridiculously treacherous out there on the road. So you got today you got much of tomorrow."
He said Sunday will also be a less treacherous day to travel.
Porter Airlines has said that it willallow its customers to make free changesto the plans because of the looming storm.
Environment Canada said that and addition to potentially dangerous driving conditions, the winter storm could cause power outages as well.
"Consider altering plans through the holiday weekend as travel conditions may become dangerous. Extensive utility outages are possible. Temperatures Friday night into the weekend will likely be the coldest of the season to date," the agency said.
Environment Canadaurged people to stay tuned to local weather conditionsthroughout the next few days.
"While there is high confidence in a high impact winter storm, the details regarding wind speeds, precipitation types and amounts remain uncertain at this time," the agency's statement said. "Please monitor your local forecast and the latest alerts for your area."
While a low of 4 C is expected in Toronto Thursday, the temperature is expected to plummet to -10 C on Friday. The temperature is then expected to remain below the freezing mark all the way through Boxing Day on Monday, hovering between -10 C and -4 C.
WEATHER IN OTHER PARTS OF CANADA ALREADY CAUSING TRAVEL CHAOS
While the winter wallop has not yet started in Toronto, thousands of passengers are already experiencing delays and frustration due to a storm which struck B.C. this week, stranding some people indefinitely.
One man who spoke to CP24 Wednesday, said his flight to Vancouver was cancelled and he may be spending Christmas at Pearson.
"We wandered the halls of this great airport all night trying to find people to help. They're so busy," he said. "All the people at the desk don't know what the bosses may or may not be thinking. Like, are they going to put another plane on? Are they going to feed us out of here in dribs and drabs and take days and days to get out? We've heard four days maybe for us."
Airports in BC are continuing to struggle in the wake of asnowstorm which was followed by extreme cold temperatures. Much of Western Canada is currently under an extreme cold weather alert

'Sleep wherever you can find it': Hundreds of travellers stranded at YVR airport following winter storm
A woman said that she was stranded for over 10 hours on the airport tarmac, with the crew rationing snacks and water. People were "starting to panic."
Nearly all flightsout of Vancouver International Airport (YVR)were cancelled Tuesday (Dec. 20) morning in the wake of the worst winter storm of theyear -- and more cancellations and delays are expected thisweek.
While itssnowfall warning has ended, Environment Canada has issued an Arctic outflow warning for the region as strong winds will make already frigid temperatures feel piercingly cold.
Butanother snow event is also expectedto follow the bone-chilling cold systemsometime later this week -- and it will cause more problems at local airports.
The Vancouver airport's team has issued several YVR updates throughout the day, with many of them thanking the travelling public for their continued patience as the crew clears the ice and snow.
Around 3 p.m., the airport tweeted that a "small number of flights" were able to depart but that the "majority of scheduled flights" are cancelled. Air passengers should not come to YVR unless they "absolutely need to."
The Vancouver airport also characterized the cancellations as "unprecedented."
Air Canada has also released a Vancouver-specific statement, noting that the impactful storm is affecting its operations at YVR. Customers are advised tocheck their flight statusprior toleaving for the airport and rebook onlineif their flight is cancelled.
Abbotsford International Airport (YXX) also released a statement Tuesday morning, noting thatthere are flight delays and cancellations due to the snow.
Travellers flying in or out ofYXX shouldcheck with their airline for the status of their flight. In all tweets, the airport has advised travellers to defer to airlines for information about cancellations.
"Our crews and partners are working extremely hard to clear the snow," the YXX airport wrote in a tweet.
Numerous passengers resorted to sleeping at the airport or resting there while awaiting transportation. One traveller tweetedthere were no taxis, Ubers, or even the Canada Line service to get people out of the airport and many of them were stranded over "24 hours hoping to either fly or get to a hotel."
"Hundreds of us left with no booked flight anymore...just exhausting
Westjet flights were cancelled today at YVR airport
Vancouver photographerCraig MiniellytoldVancouver Is Awesomein a phoneinterview that he was almost stranded at the airport after his red-eye flight with WestJet wascancelled Monday night. While itwas cancelled around 1 a.m., it took several hours to get his luggage because it hadalready been checked in.
By the time he had located his luggage, the Canada Line was no longer running and he couldn't get a cab as there were hugelineups. He headedto the Fairmont Hotel area in the airport to see if he might be able to check his luggage while he waited. When he did, hemet a woman who had been stuck for a couple of days.
"[She had been]stuck for a couple of days trying to get home and she had a hotel downtown but couldn't get to it," he explained."I saw acab outside in the street...the guy was pulled over and cleaning his windshield.
"So I went out and I helped himclean his windshield and I convinced him to pick us up and take us downtown."
While Minielly says he was fortunate to get out, hundreds of others were not. He shared an imageof an air passenger resorting tosleeping in a phone booth because there were so few places left to rest. Another individual slept on the back of a cart.
Many passengers reported lengthy waits on the tarmac, too. One woman said that the crew on a WestJet flight was rationing snacks as the passengers waited upwards of 10 hours.
Already 6hrs waiting on the tarmac with no answers f..;@yvrairport. Really disappointed of the logistics and lack of preparation of an anticipated snowstorm. If you can't handle it, dont take it. Would've rather get a canceled flight than starve here.#yvrairport#bcstormpic.twitter.com/vKdUnXdMHC
