Topic for Paper : ChatGPT
Last week you traced the history of your chosen technology. This week we will examine what the technology was designed to do and how it is actually being used. As we have seen, the transformational impact of a new technology is not necessarily the technology itself, but often it's the unanticipated ways in which people put the technology to use. An example of that would be the Norwegian teenagers mentioned in Tom Wheeler's book who discovered that their mobile devices were able to send short messages and through this discovery unexpectedly ushered in the era of text messaging.
Step 1: Conduct a research on the intended and unintended uses of the generative AI tool you have chosen for your project. You can use the web search tool to find relevant sources, such as articles, blogs, podcasts, videos, or reviews. You may want to research the main purposes or goals of the tool, who the target users or audiences of the tool are, what some of the benefits or drawbacks of using the tool are, etc.
Step 2: Write a 750-1000 word (3-4 double-spaced pages) paper that explores the intended and unintended uses of the generative AI tool you have chosen. Since you will be publishing your paper to Medium, I expect you to include hyperlinks to all your sources (each time you would use an in-text citation in a traditional paper, simply include a hyperlink). I also expect that you include at least one picture and one video (if there is no video include any other type of multimedia content).
In your post, you should address the following points:
- What are the intended uses of the tool, and how do they align with the design and functionality of the tool?
- What are some of the unintended uses of the tool, and how do they deviate from or extend the original vision of the tool?
- How do the intended and unintended uses of the tool affect individuals and society in terms of opportunities and fears, such as empowerment, collaboration, innovation, plagiarism, deception, manipulation, harm, etc.?
- What are your personal opinions and experiences about using the tool for different purposes, and how do they compare with other users or experts?
Step 3: Include at least three examples of the intended and unintended uses of the tool in your Medium post. Explain how each use is related to the features and functions of the tool, and what are the outcomes or impacts of each use. You can also compare and contrast different uses to highlight the similarities or differences between them.
