No, your favourite coffee order isn't disappearing. The Tim Hortons-branded CIBC Visa card is ending early next year, according to a letter sent out to Double Double cardholders this week. "CIBC will no longer be offering the CIBC Tim Hortons Double Double Visa Card to clients. This was a joint decision and will allow both of our organizations to pursue other opportunities to provide credit card and reward offerings that are tailored to the needs of our respective clients," CIBC spokesperson Trish Tervit confirmed in an email, on behalf of the bank and Tim Hortons. As of Jan. 8, the card known for its tiny built-in buttons and lights can no longer be used for purchases. Double Double cardholders will be sent a replacement CIBC Dividend Visa card, which offers cash back on all purchases, rather than Tims Rewards points. They'll also be emailed a virtual card allowing them to spend the Tims Rewards points they've accumulated until now. Holders of the Double Double Visa earned 1 per cent back in Tims Rewards money on all purchases made with the card. Tervit also pointed out that like the Double Double, the new card comes with no annual fee. The much-heralded Double Double card was introduced in 2014, shortly after CIBC lost its monopoly on credit cards offering Aeroplan points when TD also partnered with Aeroplan. The elimination of the card comes as Tim Hortons is trying to encourage customers to use an app-based version of Tims Rewards, something acknowledged by the head of Tim Hortons' parent company on a recent conference call to discuss quarterly earnings.
