A committee at a local high school wants to conduct a survey to estimate the proportion of students happy with the physical appearance of the school buildings and grounds. The committee is considering two methods of obtaining a sample of 400 students from the 2,500 students at the high school.

Part A: Because of financial constraints, the first method the committee is considering is to keep the cost at a minimum. A large number of students will attend the first pep rally of the school year, and the first 400 students who enter the gym will be used as a sample. Identify the type of sampling method proposed and discuss why this sampling method might be biased. (5 points)

Part B: Because of the large number of students at the high school, the second method the committee is considering consists of using a computer with a random-number generator to select a simple random sample of 400 students from a list of 2,500 student names.
