1. 10mol/s of gas flow through a turbine. Find the ehange in enthalpy that the gas experiences: a) The gas is steam, with an inlet temperature and pressure T600 gnd P=20bar, and an outlet temperature and pressure T350C and P4 bar. Use the steam tables. ( 5 points) b) The gas is steam, with the same inlet and outlet conditions as in part A. Model the steam as an ideal gas using the value of C given in Appendix D. (15 points) 2. One mole of ideal gas is confined in a piston-cylinder device, which is 1 foot in diameter. The piston can be assumed weightless and frictionless. The internal and external pressures are both initially 1 atm. An additional weight of 20lbm is placed on top of the piston, and the piston drops until the gas pressure balances the force pushing the piston downward. The temperature of the gas is maintained at a constant temperature of 80.33F throughout the process. a) What is the final pressure of the gas? (10 points) b) What is the final volume of the gas? (10 points) c) How much work was done on the gas during the process? (15 points) 3. Liquid water enters a steady-state heat exchanger at P=10 bar and T=80C and exits as: saturated water vapor at P=10 bar. i) Using the steam tables, find the change in specific enthalpy for this process. (10 points) ii) Using the approximation that Cp=4.19J/gK for liquid water, find the change in enthalpy when liquid water is heated from 80C to its boiling point at P=10 bar. ( 10 points) iii) How do the answers to parts A and B compare to each other? What is the reason for the difference between them. ( 5 points)
