1. A researcher at University is investigating the effect of music on perceived levels of happiness. The researcher obtains a random sample of 600 students from University whom she randomly assigns to 3 groups. Each student is shown a picture of a man and asked to report whether the man looks happy or sad. Before looking at the picture, however, students in group 1 are required to listen to a happy song, students in group 2 are required to listen to a sad song, while students in group 3 (the control group) are required to listen to no song. After completing her experimentation, the researcher notes that 81% of the students in group 1 said the man looks happy, 68% of the students in group 2 said that the man looks happy, and 76% of the students in group 3 said that the man looks happy. Based off of these results, the researcher states that music seems to have an effect on the perceived levels of happiness among students.

  2. Is this study a designed experiment or an observational study? Explain why. (2 marks)
  3. Is this study descriptive or inferential? Explain why. (2 marks)
  4. Propose two different methods to randomly assign the 200 students to each of the 3 groups. Hint: think of this as obtaining a simple random sample of 200 students from a collection of 600 students, then taking a second random sample of 200 students from the remaining 400 students, in order to obtain 3 separate random samples, each of size 200.
