1. AIDA at Work: Choose one of the following scenarios and draft a persuasive letter to the appropriate entity utilizing the AIDA format we covered in this module. You should generate any details that are needed to best craft your assignment.
- You want Professor Cornell West to speak to your community group. You know Dr. West has written and spoken extensively on human rights, but you also know he is a very busy man. Write a letter, using AIDA, to convince him to take the time to speak to your group.
- You own a retail store in downtown Lake Worth. You have noticed that your business has fallen by twenty percent since the city began enforcing parking violations more stringently. If your store loses out on any more business, you may have to close. note a persuasive AIDA letter to the city council explaining why they should relax parking enforcement.
- You are currently raising money for a local charity (you pick one). Using AIDA, craft a persuasive letter to local businesses asking for donations to the charity you have chosen. Be specific about which charity you are representing and which business you are asking for donations.
- You live on Main Street, which is riddled with potholes to the point that both drivers and pedestrians are at risk. In the last week, there have been two accidents where a driver swerved around a pothole and one car hit another vehicle and another narrowly missed a pedestrian. In the case of the car accident, the driver of the car that was hit suffered multiple fractures and cuts, even though the driver who swerved suffered no injuries. In the near-miss with the pedestrian, a small child was nearly struck by the vehicle but was saved by their parent (who was outside with them at the time). Using concrete and specific details, as well as AIDA format (those included here and those you generate on your own), craft a letter to the local city council (the city is Anywhere, FL) to get them to fix the potholes as soon as possible before someone is killed.
2. For this assignment, your group will work to craft a 60-second commercial spot utilizing the AIDA format we have been discussing this week in class. The commercial spot should be crafted to sell a product or service that the company your group founded will produce. The actual product is up to your group, but you will need to clearly utilize AIDA in crafting your spot, and 60 seconds is a very short window in which to include all the information. You will need to focus on concision if you are going to fit everything into the spot.
Submissions will be in the form of a recorded media file through Kultura or a .mp4, etc. that can be accepted by the system. Submissions are limited to 60 seconds in length and going over is not allowed. Instructions for using Kaltura can be found in the Canvas Student Orientation, ELO1000. A link to that course is available to you in the Start Here Module.
In addition to the video submission, student groups will craft a one-page explanation of the rhetorical choices made for their commercial. This should cover why they chose specific language, visual rhetoric, music, etc. even if it is not included in the video submission but they wanted to include it and could not.
Your rhetorical situation is Commercial (genre), Persuasive (purpose), and Audience (you will determine based on the product or service being sold).
3. At a job interview before I became a professor, the hiring manager asked me to perform a spot assessment/analysis of their company's web page. Thankfully, I had already done my research into the company and was somewhat prepared, but I had ten minutes to analyze the web page and then discuss what I felt were the strengths and weaknesses the page. For this assignment, I am going to have you do something similar in order to better prepare you for both this possibility in a job interview and to tie together our work on visual rhetoric, rhetorical situations, AIDA, real-world skills, and responding in AIDA format. You will submit a one-page memo that focuses on an analysis of the current web page and suggestions for any improvements you believe should be made. This should be in proper memo format (since it is interoffice communication), and one page is the maximum allowed length.
Reference - Locate a web page in your field of interest (based on your major) and provide the link for the page at the bottom of your memo. You will be analyzing this page's use of visual rhetoric (Are there multiple pictures? Who are the people in them? Are the people reflecting diversity? What colors are the logo? What is the background color? How easy is it to read and navigate? Can you easily locate the information? Etc.)
