1 ax Assignment ( 40% of homework component of grade) Due: Friday, September 29 by 11:59pm into Folio dropbox You may work in groups of 1,2 or 3 . Put all names in the comments section of the assignment drop. Instructions: You will be doing the taxes for a couple that is a good friend of the Smith's. The Jones family is like the Smith family in every way. They do all the same things that John and Jane Smith do, but they are insecure so they do them on a bigger scale than John and Jane. Therefore, by making the following changes to John and Jane Smith's numbers, you will have the correct numbers for Don and Donna Jones: - Don's Social Security number: 234-56-7899 - Donna's Social Security number: 234-56-7900 - Their address is 246 Fake St., Springfield, MO 12345 - They had health insurance throughout the year. - Every dollar figure on Don's W-2 should be 2.75x the amount on John's. - All of Don and Donna's 1099 forms should reflect dollar amounts 2.00x the amount of John and Jane's. - Don and Donna gave 3.5x as much in charity. - Don and Donna paid 3x as much in real estate taxes. - Donna paid 2.25x as much in tuition. - Donna paid 2.5x as much in student loan interest. - Don and Donna paid 3.5x as much in mortgage interest. Your job is to fill out and turn in the appropriate tax forms so as to MINIMIZE the Jones family tax liability while still doing everything properly. You may turn in worksheets and schedules that you don't use in order to help with partial credit BUT the forms you would not mail in must clearly be labeled "WOULD NOT MAIL" at the bottom of the page. A penalty of 2% will be taken off for each form that handed in (beside the cover sheet) that would not be mailed to the IRS and is not marked "WOULD NOT MAIL". Be sure to read all the instructions carefully. With changes to deductions and income, calculations may need to be done a little differently than what we did in class. IRS.gov does have PDF files that you can type into and then print. However, you may turn in handwritten forms so long as the numbers are legible. If I have to guess at your number, it will be marked wrong. Please use camscanner or another app which will allow you to submit ONE pdf file. I will not grade multiple jpgs or pdfs. Assume that the AMT will not apply. That is a cumbersome process to figure out and is beyond the scope of this class
