Has your career been shaped by any notable obstacles or turning moments?
I am an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Georgia State University and my primarily sport assignment is Football. I was able to get to this point in my career through making connections, being compassionate with everyone I encountered and staying committed to the dream I wanted for myself. I have wanted to be an Athletic Trainer since my Junior year of High school. After being a student at GSU for two years and going to all the football and basketball games I choose to reach out to Georgia State Sports Medicine team. After reaching out I had the opportunity to work with GSU football for the 2018-2019 season and I knew then I was going to be an Athletic Trainer.
As a minority woman in sports, I've had many obstacles to get to where I am today. One of the most notable obstacles is also a reoccurring one. I love working football and athletic trainers for football are predominately male. Coaches and staff are hesitant to hire women due to players/coaches being distracted during practices/games, the possibility of inappropriate relationships between players and women athletic trainers and the notion of women are not able to handle the physical demand of working football. To overcome these obstacles, I strive to be 1% better every day in every aspect of being an athletic trainer. I also am super conscious of how I speak to my athletes and how close we become because of the extended hours we spend with them.
Could you list some qualities you think a successful leader should possess?
In what ways do these traits aid leaders in handling disagreement among their subordinates?
Qualities a successful leader should include great communication skills, being a critical thinker/ problem solver, committed to their team/coworkers, compassion/empathy for others, strong work ethic and authenticity. The qualities of great communication, problem solver and compassion will assist in disputing disagreements. Communication and compassion will allow both parties to be heard and understood. Speaking in a tone and choosing words that are not offensive, but stern can stir a disagreement to a discussion of differences. Once the discussion settles the leader should have problem solving skills to produce ways to remedy the situation that benefit all parties.
What kind of a leader are you, and how does the way you lead assist to the resolution of conflicts between your subordinates? How can you motivate and inspire those under your supervision to work together in an efficient manner?
If you could give an example of a moment when your leadership style was helpful in resolving a problem, what would that look like?
I lead by example. I continuously perform at a level I expect from others. I am always early, always proactive, and always going the extra mile to ensure my job is done to the best of my ability. The qualities I listed can be beneficial in more areas than the sports industry. I lead this way hoping they will pick up on characteristics that will assist them in all aspects of life. I also lead by catering to their strengths and weaknesses. I place them in positions to grow their confidence and help their weaknesses. I am always open for questions and mentorship since the relationship between my subordinates and I can influence their future career path.
I motivate those under my supervision by telling them I was in their shoes 2 years ago. I also explain that the people you are working with now may one day be your coworkers or in a position that can catapult your career. The work ethic in sports is seen by everyone on staff and they should want to be remembered for something positive; being early, willingness to help, eagerness to learn are just a few that I look for as a mentor.
I currently supervise 20 undergraduate students who assist with sports medicine duties with football. During camp, it is very important we keep the athletes hydrated so there is not a medical emergency that can result in death. I made sure my students knew what my expectations were of them, and I was the example I wanted them to follow. They started off good then became comfortable. I continued to lead by example by ensuring athletes were hydrated by consistently offering beverages. Once the issue arose, I had a meeting with them to reiterate expectations and to explain that I am doing the same thing, so they do not feel unimportant. After clear communication and my consistency showing how it should be done, they began to catch on and do better.
4 . What recommendations would you make to people who are interested in pursuing a career in the sports industry?
My recommendation for someone looking to pursue a career in sports is to be a lifelong learner, be able to take constructive criticism and have fun. Working in sports no matter the branch you choose to pursue has its pros and cons but as long as you have a passion for your path the journey will be worth it.
Would you be willing to discuss any experiences you've had as a mentee and how those experiences have influenced your professional life?
I have had many great mentors but two stand out the most. The first one is Tim Adams. He was the first Athletic trainer I worked with. He was the Assistant Athletic Trainer for Georgia State University Football. He taught me so much about modalities, evaluations, injuries, emergency proceduresand so much more. He gave me opportunities to grow as a student wanting to follow in his footsteps. Tim was a great first mentee/interaction with an Athletic Trainer. Working under him solidified my aspirations to be an Athletic Trainer.
The next mentor that comes to mind is Jasmine. She was my preceptor while I was in my master's program working with a high school. She pushed me so much and I am forever grateful to her and everything she has done for me. She helped grow my confidence as a clinician through giving me countless opportunities to show what I know and review what I didn't. She picked at my weaknesses until they became strengths, and I would not be the Athletic Trainer I am today without her and her support.
What guidance would you provide those aspiring to work in the sports sector?
In a job involving sports, how crucial is it to be able to manage and resolve conflict?
The sports sector has so many avenues that can be pursued. As someone who loves sports and have a passion for healthcare, athletic Training just made sense for me. However, everyone is different, and you must figure out what you are passionate about. Sports has so many branches such as marketing, recruiting, coaching, operations, and even equipment. After finding your passion, find someone who is in the position you wish to obtain. Shadow them, ask them questions and learn from them as much as you can. Then take what you have learned and take the necessary steps to make it possible.
It is crucial to be able to manage and resolve conflict in any area, not just in the sports industry. Conflicts will arise at work, with friends and with family. Being able to navigate disagreements is a very important trait to have as a functioning adult.
