Being socially aware of diversity and being inclusive can greatly reduce employment discrimination. The text defines employment discrimination as encompassing workplace-related discrimination that includes the hiring process, the treatment of employees in terms of promotions and demotions, work schedules, working conditions, and assignments, and the disciplinary action such as reprimands, suspension, or termination. The TED talk this week brought a good perspective of how racial inequality and discrimination are still happening.

Someone who is aware of the benefits of diversity and practices inclusion is less likely to discriminate against someone in the workplace. Having diversity in the workforce not only helps combat employment discrimination, but it adds value to any business. Diversity means new ideas brought to the table, different perspectives for solving problems, and solutions that will benefit the whole instead of the few. Understanding diversity in the workplace can make a huge difference when it comes to many aspects like work schedules and assignments. As a manager, you need to be aware of different workplace arrangements, like if an employee needs extra breaks to pray according to their religion. It’s important to know someone’s background and experiences when selecting those for different positions. Ensuring you are being unbiased when making decisions in the workplace is key not only to being non-discriminatory, but in utilizing everyone’s strengths and developing their weaknesses. By promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace, employers can reduce employment discrimination.

Employment discrimination is a broad based definition encompassing workplace-related discrimination that includes (1) hiring process; (2) the treatment of employee in terms of promotions and emotions, work schedules, working conditions, and assignments; and (3) disciplinary actions such as reprimands, suspension or terminations. Employees should not be discriminated for race, color, gender, religion, national origin, age, disabilities, and other characteristic (Melvin, Sean P and Guerra-Pujol PG 406-407).

Diversity helps in ways in terms of being fair with everyone starting from the hiring process all the way up to leadership position. Having a diverse workforce will impact the culture. Having a diverse workplace would make it fair (decisions, workload, tasks, projects and promotions) for all which will decrease the chances for employment discrimination. Stovall describes diversity as something that she is being single minded. In reality, we all should be single minded about this issue. We must be diverse in all areas and be open minded to everything.

Inclusion helps in ways of impacting individuals. Giving all the employees empowerment in making decisions in a fair and justified way. Inclusion would help people to understand the racial literacy. Having inclusion would help people understand the experiences that they could not have experienced, ever. Opening up the heart would give the majority a chance to understand another person’s experiences and enjoy and understand a different culture that they were never exposed too. Inclusion would eliminate employment discrimination. Treat everyone the same and include everyone the same.
