1) Compare/contrast your findings with your group member.
2) Did your group member's results match the gender difference predicted in the text? Explain.
(Group Member's Findings)
1) Watch 3 male/female interactions. Observe each person for at least one minute. Observe the interactions as unobtrusively as possible. It is best if you watch and NOT listen to the interactions. Look for nonverbal displays of emotion. If you cannot observe "live" interactions, you may observe male/female interactions in the media.Briefly describe each interaction (for example:location, age of individuals).
I work at walmart overnight and I watched a few people throughout the week. Everyone is aged 26-45. I watched 2 women one was age 30 and one was 50. They were working together to stock the feminine items. They were having a conversation and it looked as if they were enjoying what they were talking about.
I watched my supervisor age 32, and my older brother age 34 while they were walking and talking. They were talking about the tasks that we were doing after our lunch break. One of our other coworkers age 40, came over and ruined the entire mood with saying negative things about what we had to do. When he walked over, we could see in his body language while he was walking over.
Lastly, I watched 2 other employees. I think their ages were 50 (male) and maybe 38 (female). They were walking together while moving items on a pallet jack to the spot it was supposed to be. I didn't see them really make any emotions or have any body language. They were just walking and talking while moving freight.
2) Rate each individual on a seven-point scale. Where 1 = Not at all emotionally expressive and 7 = Extremelyemotionally expressive.
List your ratings for each individual noting if they were male or female. For examples: Females - 5,7,2 Males - 2, 5, 1
Males: 6,5,5,4
Females: 7,7,4
3) Do your own observations match the gender difference predicted in the text? Explain.
Honestly, without knowing what they were talking about I can't gauge if it was different. But if I base it off the text, yes. Women expressed themselves more than the men did. The women at my job that I did view either knew each other or they were just getting the job done. The men at my job didn't really show much emotion when I did see them. They were there to get the job done and leave. The one negative person is always that way. He has no reason to be the way he is, he is just negative.
(My Findings)
1. On air/ tv host
Since they are on live television, I think their emotions are on point. They are giving everything they can to portray the role that was assigned to them. It was nice watching them since they give non verbal cues that make their viewers really like the entire show. For example, they did something like pushing their co-host as if they are playing, which made the viewers laughed.
Emergency room
Everyone knows that in ER, there are so many emotions. For example , watching on code, the patient's relative male 50 years old ( uncle 50 y/o) rushing to the ER uneasy but composed due to his drowning niece (20). On the other hand, the female ( 30 y/o), who happened to be the pt's mother is crying out loud and telling everyone to save her child.
Office
On a quiet day, the male is very serious. No additional movements are seen as he was looking at the computer monitor in front of his desk.
Female on the other hand is chatting with her colleagues, making thumbs up, and clapping hands with each other, laughing, and more.
2. I give 6 points for male on tv because the emotions are giving. He portrayed the role well. While 7 for the female because she also did express very well and the emotions are really captivating.
I give 5 points for male in ER since he showed emotions but not that much compare to the female, whom I gave 7 pint , since she is very emotional.
I give 3 point for male in the office since he is not showing much of his emotions. While 4 for the female since she is showing some emotions.
3. I think the gender difference matches my observation among the 3 males and 3 females in different locations. As I was observing their gestures, non verbal cues, I get to notice that their location also give an impact to their actions. For example, in order to portray more or convince the audience on television, they need to act more and do more to entertain them. While on ER, since the ambiance is very emotional and life is at risk, people tend to be emotional and uneasy. Meanwhile, in the office, the employees tend to be calm and composed, others may be relaxed or not serious.
