1. Consider how you can apply a theory or theoretical concepts discussed in this class to a real-world situation How does this theory help you to better understand some situation or phenomena? How does this improved understanding help you to be more happy/effective/empathetic/critical/creative?

2. Select two theorists. Compare and contrast how their theory guides sociological research? You can discuss matters like question selection, whether the theory is calling for historical or ahistorical analysis, inductive or deductive logic, qualitative or quantitative data?

3. Structural functionalists argue that humans are motivated to live up to the internalized norms and values of their culture. Exchange theorists argue that humans are motivated by the pursuit of rewards and punishments. Think of a particular situation in your life and assess which theory seems to better explain your conduct in that situation. To what extent are you acting out of a desire to fulfill cultural expectations or are you trying to avoid punishment and gain rewards?

4. Apply the Collins' theory of the matrix of domination to yourself: Describe how are you advantaged and/or disadvantaged relative to some others in at least two of the four domains (structural domain, disciplinary domain, hegemonic domain, interpersonal domain)?
