1) Reward power: Because Bill Gates is the founder of software giant Microsoft and a multibillionaire, he will be able to provide rewards that are desired by his subordinates. This includes paychecks, bonuses, performance appraisals ratings, praise, special benefits or perks. All these can make for Gates' workers to stay on his good side which will be advantageous for him.
2) Coercive power: As Bill Gate is the founder of software giant, he has the ability to punish any of his workers even if the threat of doing so is not made explicit. This can be done by handing out demotions, giving reprimands, suspending workers, giving undesirable assignment, denying transfers or taking away some other kind of privilege. It will be best for Gates' workers to avoid making him angry because with this power Gate could make things difficult for his workers if they provoke him.
3) Legitimate power: Bill Gates being the founder of software giant Microsoft, this gives him legitimate power which comes with a formal position of authority. Gates' workers have the obligation to comply with reasonable request given that he has a legitimate position or tile. Gates' has the right considering his position to expect all his workers to comply with legitimate request.

This makes his top employees closer to himself and the company because the money holds them to it. It also incentivizes people to stay on his good side. Bu staying on his good side, it makes promotion more likely and salary and bonuses larger.
Coercive- This is seen in Gates' strong-armed business tactics. Gates has been accused of essentially trying to fold other companies. He has this power because of how large Microsoft is, and the number of different sectors of the business. He implements a "sell it or lose it" strategy to acquire other businesses, which is clearly a coercive tactic. Along with that, Gates has been called a "bully" by other companies and CEOs.
Legitimate- Gates has legitimate power because he has real authority. This comes with starting the company. He grew Microsoft into what it is today. In addition, he has legitimate power because he expects his employees to comply with his requests.
Referent- Gates has earned his power in the business world. He earned it by starting Microsoft and growing it into a giant. People look up to him and respect him because of his success. His tactics for acquiring other companies also contribute to referent power because people admire his ability to get what he wants for his company.
Expert- Bill Gates is clearly an expert in the tech world. He possesses all of the knowledge and skills to earn this power. He did not simply step in or take control of a family business. He has this power because Microsoft is his company, and he clearly knows how to run it.
