Distribution functions to balance supply and demand for a good or service. If there is too much demand, distribution will be too busy and unable to keep up. If there is too little demand, distribution will be too slow and there will be a surplus of supply. The infamous TP shortage of 2020 is an example of a distribution that fell out of whack. Demand had gotten so high that the distribution networks hadn't been able to keep up with the supply that they had. This created scarcity which led to a buying frenzy of the supply that was available. This further heightened the shortage. By distributions limiting the amount that was received and purchased, they were able to soften this to a degree.

Companies like Amazon and Home Depot are growing fast and have been growing fast for a while now. They are seeing global growth in the eCommerce space. In order to stay relevant, companies like this need to be able to deliver farther, faster. By investing in the distribution network, companies like Amazon can move their products to customers quicker and more efficiently.

Distribution is all about moving products to consumers. Distribution can positively affect supply chain performance when Things are acting smoothly. For instance with Amazon, one of the distribution choices they made was to rent postal trucks on sundays. This allows them to do additional deliveries on sundays. An example of how distributions operations can negatively impact supply chain performance is when there is a natural disaster or something that people don't prepare for.

Transportation is immensely important in supply chain. People have to constantly consider the best ways to transport goods. For instance, in my job, I ship blood samples around the world. They are perishable and need to be kept on dry ice. This also means that trucks and planes have to be adequately ventilated so people do not suffocate on CO2 fumes. Transportation on ventilated trucks and planes can seriously positively affect supply chain, while if something like ships were used, it would drop significantly.
