Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) clients often face stigma, prejudice, and discrimination, and as a result have higher rates of mental health problems and seek out mental health services at a higher rate than do their heterosexual peers. Unfortunately, mental health professionals do not always respond to LGBT clients in a therapeutic way, which could exacerbate their problems.
