This post will share examples for supporting, developing, and recognizing leadership behavior.
I have experienced supporting leadership behavior at my current organization, the team and I were working on launching a new Customer Portal and a new website which limited our time and resources for any other project requests. During a team meeting, our Director asked us to push back on any larger project requests that we received and loop him into the conversations if any issues arose. This gave the team the confidence to push back when necessary knowing that we had the Director's support.
Employee development is important for individuals and organizations, but the implementation has to be done well for the program to succeed. The organization I work for provides many opportunities for development like conferences and seminars, leadership training, on-job training, training to learn more about the organization, roles and divisions and software specific training. Divisions are given a specific budget for development activities and employees are expected to provide their managers with a list of their desired opportunities and the cost associated with each. Managers are then expected to budget for a minimum of one development opportunity for each employee and help them block time and structure projects around the development opportunity. This ensures that employees are able to attend development opportunities that interest them and are able to take the time to focus and complete them.
The organization I work for makes it incredibly easy for senior leaders, managers and collogues to recognize one another and congratulate each other when someone goes above and beyond their job responsibilities, a project was completed faster than expected or the project results were better than anticipated. Employees are able to use single sign-on to access a company partner website and search for the individual they would like to recognize. Based on the achievement, the nominator can select the bronze award for $50, the silver award for $200 or the gold award for $500. The monetary award keeps employees motivated and encourages them to recognize others achievements as well.
