1. In this activity you judged two sets of photographs (Set A was used twice): Set A = photos of "regular" (non-famous) people; Set B = photos of famous people.

SUPPOSE that we were going to do actual research study, and that this would be the first study ever done on this topic of impressions. Our hypothesis is that, when the research participants make ratings of the facial photographs, their ratings of how physically attractive the people in the set of photos are will be positively correlated with their ratings of those people's (the people in the photos) other desirable characteristics. In other words, based on the photos, people who are rated as more attractive will be also be rated more favorably on other desirable characteristics such as warmth, intelligence, success, and so on. Thus, we are predicting that there will be a "positive attractiveness stereotype" whereby people with attractive faces are generally perceived to have more positive traits than are people with less attractive faces.

If we did this study, which set of photographs should we use? In other words, which set -- Set A or Set B -- would provide a more valid way to examine how people form impressions of other people? To help you form an answer, you can ask yourself the following question: When you (and people in general) rate the photos, for which set -- Set A (regular) or Set B (famous) -- are the ratings least likely to be biased or influenced by extraneous (i.e., preexisting or other) factors?
