1 Introduction Anemia, characterized by a low concentration of hemoglobin in blood, is one of the most prevalent health ailments worldwide. Stevens et al. (2013) estimated that, in 2011, 29% of women, 38% of pregnant women, and 43% of children (ages 6-59 months) were anemic globally. The harms of anemia are numerous and can be severe, including impaired cognitive development among children (with lifelong consequences), higher rates of maternal and perinatal deaths, and lost productivity due to lethargy and fatigue caused by diminished capacity to deliver oxygen to tissues (Thomas et al. 2006, Black et al. 2013). The most common cause of anemia is iron deficiency, estimated to account for about 50% of the global anemia prevalence among women and 40% among children (Stevens et al. 2013). Anemia can also be caused or worsened by genetic traits, low intake of other micronutrients such as folate, or vitamin B12, or infections such as with malaria or intestinal parasites (Stevens et al. 2013). Despite India's rapid economic growth, micronutrient deficiency rates across the country remain high. For example, in rural areas of some of the largest Indian states, NNMB (2012) estimated that in 2011-12 intakes of iron, vitamin A, riboflavin, vitamin C and folate were below half of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) in more than half of pregnant women.
