1. Obtain a sample of 50 measurements of something continuous, e.g., time, length, weight, cost, etc. You can measure an actual item, pull 50 data points from an online source, or randomly generate data values in Excel. Whatever you select, your 50 measurements should have some sort of natural variation in the values. Place your data into an Excel spreadsheet. a) Develop a histogram of the 50 data points (you can do this manually, using Excel, or Minitab). What does the histogram reveal about your data? b) Use Minitab to develop a normal probability plot of the 50 data points. What do you conclude from the plot? c) Calculate the mean and standard deviation of the 50 data points. d) Collect 10 random samples, each of size n=4, from your 50 data values. (You could do this by writing each of the 50 measurements onto small pieces of paper and putting them in a bag, randomly selecting n=4 of them, recording the 4 values, then replacing them, mixing them up, and then repeating for your next sample.) There are many other methods of doing this as well. For each random sample, compute the mean (xbar). Repeat this until you have 10 samples averages. Put the sample data and averages in your Excel spreadsheet with the original data. Develop a histogram of the 10 sample averages. What do you notice about the histogram versus your answer in part a. e} Develop a normal probability plot of the sample averages. What does this plot reveal? f) Calculate the mean and standard deviation of your 10 sample averages. How do these compare with the mean and standard deviation of the original sample of 50 individual items? g) What did you learn from this exercise
