1. Obtain by either using a digital camera or download several good quality image files that include at least the following: (note: each image must be a separate image file - no single image can be counted for more than one criteria such as an indoor image that includes colorful objects). IMPORTANT: these should not already be in a low-resolution format due to downsampling that will be performed in later steps.

An outdoor landscape image

An indoor image

An image of a person(s)

An image of colorful objects (things)

Note: In your word-processed document, identify the source for your photos. If from a website, give the full URL. Give credit to the owner. If they are your own personal photos, indicate that in your document.

2. Using the files you obtained for item 1,

produce a second set of image files that have reduced color depth and resolution. (This means do this with each image a d separately.) The same file type should be used, but should be modified with resampling. Do not delete or overwrite your original - save as a new name!

compare the original and re-sampled image, record and report the technical details of your file changes (i.e. describe how much percentage reduction in filesize and resolution) and your impressions of the image quality. (20%)

3. Select one image from item 1. Produce a single jpeg image file that is compressed as much as possible and still maintains acceptable image quality. Record and report the image compression ratio. (10%)

4. Select one image from item 1. Produce an image that artistically removes the color from the image by applying filters such as sepia. Add a fancy border making the image look like a framed, antique photograph (note: just using a simple white or black border or shading is not acceptable). (10%)

5. Select one original, unedited image from item 1. Produce an image that crops, rotates, and applies a non-rectangular border (i.e. oval, circular, etc.) to the image. (15%)

6. Produce an image that combines at least three of the original individual images in item 1 into one composite image. The images should be combined into an interesting, aesthetically pleasing composite. Simply overlapping the images is not acceptable; the composite should make 'sense'. Be creative. (20%)

7. Creative Enhancements: Explore additional features and add other enhancements to at least two different photos. Describe which features were used and what was done to create the effect. (15%)

Deliverables

For each requirement, you must produce separate image files. Submit a word-processed document that provides the filenames for each of the activities above along with what you did to accomplish each of the effects. Indicate which application(s) and tool(s) you used to modify the files.

For tasks 4, 5, 6, and 7, also specify features used within the tools, etc. to accomplish the desired effects. Be sure to clearly identify which files are for each activity (using the activity number and a-d works well).

In your word-processed document, include information about which tool(s) you used to complete the assignment. Provide a brief evaluation of the tool(s). Would you recommend this tool(s) to others? Do you plan on using it again? Why or why not? (10%)
