(1) One group in society that has not been studied enough is children of mixed heritage. This is mainly because mixed children did not become a large population in society until after the Loving Supreme Court case in 1967. Mixed children tend to face a unique form of discrimination, as they are not fully a part of one group or the other. There's a saying that essentially states that mixed children "are not white enough for their white friends and not black enough for their black friends." This can be stated for any combination of races, not just someone who has black and white heritage. This has been used in the media in discussing Vice President Kamala Harris, as she is both African- American and South Asian-American (terms selected based on her Senate website page). Mixed children can also be "white presenting," meaning they can pass as a white person compared to their family members, despite their mixed heritage. This leads to strange looks or comments in public when the family is together and one or more of the children are white presenting. Mixed children also fall under the "ethnically ambiguous" category, where strangers may ask "what are you?" From observations, the question is usually "what are you," not even "who are you." This almost implies the person being asked is not human. What are some steps we can take to decrease the number of micro-aggressions mixed children receive from society, strangers, friends, or family? What kind of researc we conduct to add to the growing and needed literature to combat the identity crisis many mixed children face?
