1) Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is one of the most debated performance parameters in data center metrics. There are some that swear by it, and there are others who think that it is a garbage number. Facebook dynamically updates their PUE values, and you can see what they are currently running at by logging on to the Facebook page of the data center (check out the one in Prineville after the exam!). This is the definition of PUE: PUE= Total Power Supplied to the Data Center Computational Power Yielded (essentially what goes to the servers) As you might be able to tell from the definition, this metric is a way to quantify not only the general efficiency of the data center but mostly its cooling efficiency since cooling generally uses up to 50% of the total power supplied to a data center! Your goal is to use the measurement techniques and equipment you have learned about over the course of the year to determine this value for the data center pictured below. You only have so many slots for voltage measurement on your Data Acquisition Card (DAC), so you use them wisely. Also, if it took two ports to measure something (say needing two pressures to measure volumetric flow rate) then that must take up two slots on your DAC. Good Luck! (10 Points) Some equations you might need to know... m = p.A.V q=h-A (Ts Too) q=m Cp (Tout - Tin) V R P=1.V = 12 R = A) For a few points (let's say 3) will the PUE value be less than, equal to, or greater than one most of the time? Explain your answer. B) On the sketch of the data center infrastructure show what measurement devices you would use to quantify the PUE of this data center. Physically sketch them on the server where you would place them and label them so it is clear. C) Label them on the DAC too, so that both you and I can keep count. D) You also need to take some time to explain to me why you selected those locations and what those measurements will help you get.
