1. Read the following ethical situations below and answer the questions that follow.

i. John applies for a job and enhances his CV by indicating he obtained first time passes in all his examinations, although he actually failed three exams at the first attempt.

ii. Betty is the management accountant in a firm and is paid a bonus based on the profits of the firm. During accounts preparations, Betty notices an error in the inventory calculation which has the effect of overstating profits. Betty decides to take no action as this would decrease the bonus payable.

Required: For each of the situations above:

a. Identify and explain the ethical threat to the professional. (8 marks)

2. One person has carried out the roles of CEO and chairman since the incorporation of Value Pty (Ltd) 10 years ago. Recently, analysts have begun to criticise this policy explaining that since the CEO acts as his own boss because he has no chairman to report to, unchecked risk taking may result and although this can produce strong short-term results it can also end up harming a company. Required: Identify and explain three ways in which business operations would be improved by the separation of the roles of CEO and chairman. (9 marks)
