1. The following is a newspaper cutting revealed the dirty food processing factories was fined and ordered to close: Two factories processing foo chuk (thin dried tofu sheets) on Penang Island were slapped with three compound notices and fines totalling RM7,500 for supplying unlicensed food products. Penang Health Department environmental health, food safety and quality officer Mohd Wazir Khalid said, both factories in Lembah Permai, Tanjung Bungah, Penang, were each issued with a notice compound of RM3,500. He said one of the factory owners was also issued with an additional compound of RM500 for failing to register his premises. "Both factories were found to have supplied food products without licence and both did not keep the hygienic measures up to standards," he said during a press conference after the joint raid with Penang Island City Council (MBPP) codenamed Ops Tegar. During the operation, 12 officers from the state Health Department and eight officers from the council's Licensing Department also raided two sundry shops in Magazine Road and Macalister Road. Both shops were issued with compounds totalling RM5,500 and one of them was ordered to close. Wazir said the sundry shop along Magazine Road was issued with two compound notices totalling RM3,000 and was ordered to close by the council. "The shop was issued an RM2,500 compound for placing food on the floor and an RM500 compound for failing to provide labelling of the expiry dates on the food products." He added that the shop, which was owned and licensed to a local, was managed by a foreign worker. "This is the second time we raided this shop and found a foreign worker managing the shop instead of a local. As the shop is licensed to a local, the owner is supposed to be here to manage the shop. The shop is in a very dirty condition. We found rats, rat droppings and unhygienic ways of storing food," he said. The other shop in Macalister Road which placed its food items on the floor was also issued with an RM2,500 compound. Following the raids, Wazir chided dirty food operators and suppliers and told them to step up their hygiene and cleanliness practices at their premises. "We have been conducting raids from time to time but we find that owners often give excuses when they do not maintain the hygiene standards. We understand that people and businesses are affected by the Covid-19 pandemic but this is no excuse to disregard the standard hygiene practices," he stressed.
