1. The population of the Russia in 1998 was 147 million; the population of Nigeria was 106 million. Russia is decreasing in population by approximately 0.1% annually; the population of Nigeria is growing at 3%. To get you started, your table should look something like this:
A | B | C | |
1 | Russia | Nigeria | |
2 | 1998 | 147 | 106 |
3 | 1999 | enter formula here | enter formula here |
4 | 2000 | ||
5 | 2001 |
There is a faster way to enter the numbers in column A (rather than typing them in). Just type in 1998 and then 1999. Select both 1998 and 1999, then fill down by dragging the box in the lower right-hand corner. (There is an example of this in a video found in the lesson.) This "tip" is only for filling down numbers that are increasing in a fixed amount (for this example we are increasing by one). Never select two cells if there is a formula in one of the cells.
a. Paste the first five rows of your table into your Word document. When will Nigeria's population will exceed Russia's, assuming that the current trend continues? b. How much faith do you have in your answer? What factors could affect the validity of your prediction? (I'm not asking if you believe you did your math correctly. I'm asking if you feel your prediction above is likely to happen or not. What types of issues, specific to Russia and Nigeria, could impact whether or not the prediction will come true?)
