To achieve a better understanding of where my leadership style and skills stand today, I took part in a free online 56-question survey. As a leader, I believe that my best three skills are that I can envision a clear direction (visionary) for innovation and communicate my plans effectively with my team in a way that motivates them (Psychology Today, n.d.). I also have confidence in the knowledge that I bring forward while taking into consideration other people's opinions and thoughts as well. Early on in my transition from working at a Boston City hospital to a community-based hospital, I displayed my vision for innovation and the potential I could bring to a community setting. I was able to educate my supervisor and staff on the different kinds of imaging exams we could be doing for patients to increase the department's productivity. This was communicated well with my coworkers and everyone was excited, motivated, and on board with the idea. This idea has been a huge success for our department over the last 3 years and has allowed us to better serve the community. As I learned from the text, the strengths I have acquired need to continuously be built on to reach my greatest potential. It is best to continue to refine my talent and put more of my energy into the things I do well to grow my confidence and better my overall performance (Baedke and Lamberton, 2018).
Areas of weakness that I have as a leader are the feeling of having control of every situation and micromanagement. The second area of weakness is the idea of needing to be liked by everyone I work with. To move forward in my career, I need to understand that not everything is going to be done the way I do it. Internally, I want everything to be done correctly and efficiently, but that is not always going to be the case and that is OK. I learned in the text that teams are unable to reach their full potential when leaders are unwilling to lose some control to allow members the chance to weigh in on issues and ask questions (Garman and Dye, 2024). Upon loosening the reigns, I need to take the time to actively listen to each individual's ideas and opinions as theirs could be insightful and the better option. To overcome my fear of being liked by everyone, it will take a certain level of emotional intelligence to surpass. Over time I need to grasp the idea that not everyone is going to like me and that is again out of my control and OK. All one can do is be respectful and listen to what others have to say about you and adjust as needed.
To continue to grow as a leader and build on my strengths and weaknesses, I plan on establishing a mentor at my healthcare organization. I have taken the initiative to sit in on my organization's monthly leadership meetings to listen to the many topics ofdiscussion. I want to take part in leadership associations to constantly learn from others and find differences and similarities among other leaders. There are some leadership programs within the field of nuclear medicine that I am interested in specifically taking part in to discuss ideas with similarexpertise. I believe that to grow as a leader, you do so over time and through experiences. I can only hope to be the best leader as I grow in the healthcare field, and I look forward to the day when I can mentor someone who stands in my shoes today.
