Method Participants A total of 491 students from a private, midsize, west-coast university seeking class credit in the psychology subject pool signed up to complete the study. Of these, 475 students (96.7 %) completed an online assessment. Students were asked to recruit one parent to complete a short online parental questionnaire. Of the 475 students who completed the student survey, 459 (96.6 %) successfully recruited a parent or guard- ian. As the current study focuses on emerging adults attending college, students aged 25 or older (n-5) were excluded from the analysis. A small number of students reported living at home with their parents (7-28). As the types and level of parental monitoring are likely to be qualitatively different for students living at home with family compared to those not living with their parents, these students were also excluded from the analyses. This resulted in 426 dyads, 12 (3%) of which were missing data on one or more predictor variables. Listwise deletion was utilized to address missing data, a strategy deemed appropriate when 10 % or less of the data is missing (Greenstein and Davis 2012). The final sample consisted of 414 dyads with nonmissing values. The majority of the students were female (59.7%), first years (57.0%), and ld had a mean age of 19.0 years (SD=1.08). Students were nd 60.9 % White, 12.6 % mixed race/ethnicity, 10.6 % Asian, nd 8.5 % Hispanic/Latino (a), 4.1 % African American/Black, an and 1.9 % other races. The demographics of the sample were its similar to the larger campus population from which it was re- drawn (57.9 % female and 55.5 % white) Parents were tor predominantly female (73.2 %) and had a mean age of 109: 51.3 years (SD=5.17)
