1 Why do we have a first amendment?

Meaning why did the Framers of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights provide for the right to free speech?

2 Has social media had any effect on the 1st Amendment? If so, are they for the better or worse?

Do a quick Google search for Leslie Jones and the Twitter controversy will see sheclaims to have been viciously attacked in many personal and hurtful ways. There are many other people including non-celebrities who get caught in the media for some action and vilified.

Is this Free Speech? Is this what the First Amendment is supposed to protect?
