1. Why do you feel the Southern states did not develop the industrial structure the North did before the Civil War? Were the reasons historical, economic, geographical, political, or perhaps a combination of these?

2. In defending their region, its society and economy, Southerners often claimed the South was a "superior civilization," citing many Southern contributions to American political and cultural life. Identify some of these contributions. Do you feel they were evidence of Southern superiority? Why or why not?
