100kg/h of a 40wt% acetic acid and 60wt% water feed is sent to a countercurrent extraction column where acetic acid is extracted with isopropyl ether. Equilibrium data are in Table below. Entering isopropyl ether is pure and has a flow rate of 111.2kg/h. Raffinate is 20wt% acetic acid. 1. Define the problem by sketching the countercurrent multi-stage extraction set up and labelling the streams. Identify the components: solute (A), Diluent (D), and Solvent (S). 2. Complete the equilibrium data table below calculating the values for column 2(xS) and column 5(ys). 3. Plot the ternary diagram, using Excel. Label Y and X axis, Raffinate and Extract Curves. 4. Draw tie lines, and then draw the auxiliary curve (hint: easier to do this manually). 5. Locate RN+1 and E0 on the graph. 6. Find mixed stream flow rate and compositions using mass balance. 7. Locate M, and then locate R1 and EN on the equilibrium curves. 8. Determine the flow rate of outlet extract stream (EN) using Lever Arm rule. 9. Find delta point. 10. Estimate the number of equilibrium stages, using the auxiliary line and delta point.
