The purpose of this task is to enable you to make a presentation of your research on the key characteristics and issues involved in starting a small business in Australia and apply this knowledge to the start-up business you wish to establish. It is an important skill that you are able to sell your ideas by communicating to your audience the findings from the research you have performed. Therefore, this assessment will help you develop these skills using a PowerPoint presentation with voice-over narration. In that presentation, you are to address each section of the task below. You should also provide your script within the notes of your presentation. Your presentation should be no more than 15 minutes. Part A: Australian business characteristics and issues (10 marks) You are required to address the following characteristics and issues involved in starting and running a small business: 1. List and define the key characteristics and issues involved in starting and running a small business in Australia 2. Identify and compare ALL start-up modes. 3. Compare and contrast ALL ownership structures. You are required to address the following in relation to the establishment of your new business: 1. Identify and explain the nature and location in Australia of the new business you wish to establish. 2. Indicate which ownership structure you have chosen for your business and explain why. What are the personal risks, if any, associated with this structure?
Part B: Australian regulatory requirements (10 marks) You are required to research the general regulatory requirements that exist in Australia and apply them to your chosen businesses. Your research should be undertaken with respect to the aspects of small business commencement and continuing operations and address requirements that might apply at all levels of government (local, state and federal). The aspects you should identify and explain are: Where, how, why and with whom do small businesses register their business? Government requirements and/or fees payable relative to commencing and operating a small business (not covered in the point above or the following points). Insurance requirements (including any workers' compensation cover). Taxation requirements (both business and employee). Employee entitlements (must include superannuation, sick leave, holiday leave, and long service leave). Occupational health & safety requirements. Reporting requirements deadlines, financial and otherwise.
