13. (30 points) Noise is an ever present phenomenon in modern society; scientists are interested in determining if noise pollution has any physiological effects. In order to reduce the number of subjects without sacrificing statistical power, you test each subject across both conditions. Your independent variable is type of environment (i.e. Quiet or Noisy); and the dependent variable is systolic blood pressure. Under each condition (i.e. Quiet or Noisy) the participant will sit in a chair for 30 minutes; then systolic blood pressure will be measured and recorded. Results from this experiment are listed below. Systolic BP Quiet Noisy 109 140 110 141 112 135 107 120 107 136 a) Set up the appropriate statistical hypotheses. b) Perform the test (a=.01), obtain effect size if warranted c) Make a statistical decision. d) Draw a substantive conclusion and state it appropriately (results paragraph).
