13. An Injury Severity Score (ISS) is a medical score used to assess the trauma severity and is calculated as follows:

Each injury is assigned an Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) score in the range of 0- 5, with 0 being no injury sustained and 5 indicating significant injury sustained. These AIS scores are assigned to six regions of the body (head, face, chest, abdomen, extremities and external). As an example, a person after a major accident has the following AIS: [3 0 4 5 3 0], indicating that the person has suffered the most significant injury to their abdomen (score of 5), followed by chest (score of 4), followed by head and extremities (both a score of 3). They did not suffer any injury to their face or externals (both scored 0).
