2-Why is it important that there is not a Statue of Liberty along the border between the United States and Mexico? What does the lack of this symbol say about how the United States government views Mexican or Latino immigrants? What could be used as a symbol of Latin American immigration? By way of comparison, some Asian American activists have embraced Angel Island in SF Bay, where many Chinese immigrants were held for months in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, waiting to be admitted to the U.S. There is now a museum of Asian-American history on the island and tours of the barracks where the Chinese were detained.
