1.Devdas, A lover who died for love Devdas by Saratchandra Chatterjee was the most appealing novel to me when I was a teenage boy. The story of Devdas and Parvati worried me all the time, from the beginning to the end. Devdas and Parvati were childhood friends. Devdas was an only son to a landlord from a higher caste, and Parvati was their dancer's daughter. Devdas wanted to marry Parvati in this story, but his family was against his will because of Parvati's lower caste. Throughout the novel, Devdas had to suffer all kinds of pain, and even he had to leave his home because of Parvati. Devdas became a sober alcoholic, and he even died because of excessive drinking in the end. This novel was about a love, which never met its destination. It showed how cruel the Indian caste system was and how the Indians took the system so seriously. But Devdas was that kind of lover who showed his family how there is no difference between humans. Upon reading the novel, I realized that no matter if the world is against two lovers, they will try their best to win back each other.
