Compromise and collaboration are intentions that appear in the third stage of conflict. The intention behind both of these conflict-handling approaches is to find common ground that is partially, if not completely, acceptable to all parties. Both approaches are considered cooperation to some degree. Where they differ is the extent to which parties are satisfied. With collaboration, conflicting parties agree to find a solution that completely satisfies everyone. With compromise, parties agree to sacrifice some of their personal desires until the conflict no longer exists. (Robbins and Judge, p. 479)

Compromise and collaboration are tools I use every day for group work. The first step to both approaches is to define the desires/goals of the conflicting parties. This is easier if you aren't one of the parties in conflict. As a mediator without your own agenda, you can gather stakeholders' goals objectively through interviews. I ask each stakeholder to explain what's important to them and why. Then, I ask them to rank their goals. This exercise forces them to decide what's most important and subtly prepares them for a negotiation.

Conflict is described as a series of actions or steps taken when individuals or groups interpret that other individuals or groups has adversely influenced or is about to adversely influence something meaningful to them (Robbins & Judge, 2019). When comparing both compromising and collaborating in terms of conflict management strategies, although the methods are dissimilar from one another, the end results are geared towards similar outcomes. Both compromising and collaborating borders within the lines of being assertive and cooperative. If each individuals or groups wishes to completely meet the expectations of all involved, they are more inclined to work together in order to achieve similar results (Robbins & Judge, 2019). In contrast, there are no winners or losers when pertaining to compromising, and both parties are willing to accept whatever results achieved at the end of the conflict. However, collaborating focuses on a win-win solution where both parties are satisfied at the achieved goal (Robbins & Judge, 2019).

A personal example where I have utilized each strategy is when I was tasked to train an employee on a specific skill and he refused to learn it. The felt conflict that it created between us not only made it impossible for him to learn the skill but also created barriers for me to properly train him. After setting a meeting with him, he explained to me that because of the intricacy of that particular skill, he was afraid of making mistake or worse causing harm to a patient. In order for us to move forward and complete the task I had to compromise as well as collaborate with him in order for the both of us to reach a common goal. Those are listed below.
