1.Robert is an academic whose area of expertise is the treatment of Christianity in the latter period of the Roman Empire. Robert has recently published a new non-fiction book (The Pagan & The Christian) which specifically examines the differences in temperament regarding Christians of two Roman Emperors, Galerius and Constantine. His argument is that contrary to generally accepted thought, Galerius was in fact less pagan and more pro-Christian than thought, while Constantine was actually more pagan and less pro-Christian than usually thought.

A year after publication, Robert is disappointed by the lack of press attention the book has received and by the fact that sales have been respectable but not overwhelming.

One day, while out browsing at his local bookstore, he notices a book on the "Just Published" table of historical fiction novels. The book is called Old & New Gods of Rome and is a work of fiction that explores one prominent Roman Governor's encounters with Christians over the course of the reign of both Galerius and Constantine. The novel presents Roman society as being much more ambivalent regarding Christians than generally thought. Whilst the book alludes to Imperial policy on Christians, it focuses more on the life of the Governor and his society/thoughts rather than the lives or thoughts of either Galerius and Constantine. Robert buys a copy of the book and while reading it starts to believe, however, that the novel has unfairly benefited from arguments he has developed.

A while after this, Robert notices that Old & New Gods of Rome features high on the best-seller list and starts to get positive reviews in reputable publications. One review that he spots in a prominent national newspaper lauds, Old & New Gods of Rome as having "breathed new life into our understanding of this aspect of Roman society".
