2 3 4 5 6 7 1 Before Jayden's parents left for their dinner date, they reminded him of the rules of babysitting, plus some specifics about his younger sister, Tatyanna. They were firm about the bedtime routine, so they reviewed it again. This time, they added a new rule: no scary books. 8 9 10 11 "Your Uncle Mateo may never babysit again after he told Taty those stories about the Chupacabra!" said Mom. "Don't worry," said Jayden. "I've got this. Have fun." Jayden didn't mind watching Taty. She didn't usually cry and never had tantrums. She was willing to play just about anything, and Jayden could always make her laugh. Still, Jayden hoped she would fall asleep easily so that he could have at least an hour to himself to play video games online with his friends before his parents came home. During the bedtime routine, Jayden read, again and again, books about princesses who save themselves and a boy who pretends he's a world champion lucha libre competitor. After, Jayden said goodnight to Taty, gently closed her door, and quietly raced to his room to play online. Just as Jayden was about to log in, he heard, "Jaaaayden!" He rushed back to check on Taty. "What's wrong?" he asked. "I can't sleep," said Taty. How is that possible? he thought. We played all night. She should be exhausted. "I'm afraid the Chupacabra will come for my stuffed animals," she said seriously. Jayden smirked but didn't laugh at Taty because he remembered being afraid of the Chupacabra when he was her age. When he got older, he learned the Chupacabra was nothing more than a legendary creature from folklore. "Taty, the Chupacabra isn't real. Tio Mateo's stories were just that-made-up stories. Trust me, okay?" "Okay," she said, with a shaky voice. 14 "I'll leave the nightlight on for you," he offered. "Will that make you feel better?" 15 16 17 18 13 20 12 21 When he returned to Taty's room, Jayden said, "Listen, even if the Chupacabra was real, it eats live animals, mostly goats. Stuffed animals are safe. Okay?" Without waiting for an answer, Jayden turned around to walk out of her room. He didn't even get past the door when Taty said, "Jayden, wait!" The tremble in her voice made his heart sink. Her fear was real and wouldn't magically disappear by telling her the Chupacabra was nothing to worry about. 22 She nodded and slid down in her bed, her entire body surrounded by stuffed animals. 19 Jayden knew he had to make her feel like she could conquer her fear and the Chupacabra. He spun around and dramatically planted his feet shoulder-width apart. His hands were balled into fists and pushed into his hips, like a superhero. Jayden slipped out of Taty's room and tiptoed back to his room. Again, before he could get onto his video game, his sister called, "Jaaaayden!" Jayden sighed. He knew that, when his parents got home, they would tell him to turn off his video game and go to bed. He looked at the clock, annoyed that he was running out of time to play online with his friends. 23 "All right, Taty, I think you're old enough to learn how to really deal with the Chupacabra." Tatyanna sat up in her bed, her eyes wide. "How?" she asked. "The only way to beat him is with pillows," Jayden said. "Really?" she said with a laugh. 24 "Really!" said Jayden "I want you to practice so that you can be a Chupacabra fighting warrior if you ever see one in real life. Pretend I'm the Chupacabra. Arm yourself!" 27 Tatyanna grabbed a pillow, jumped up and down on her bed, and swung at her brother over and over and over until her arms couldn't hold the pillow any longer. Exhausted, Taty slid back into bed. When Jayden offered to sit in a nearby chair until she fell asleep, Tatyanna said, "I'm fine now. I have my Chupacabra-fighting pillow." 26 Jayden smiled as he left the room. He waited by the door in case she called for him. Nothing. He slowly walked down the hall but stopped before he reached his room. He listened for his name. Nothing. Just to be sure, he went back to her room and peaked inside. Taty's eyes were closed and her breathing was heavy. One hand held onto a stuffed bear while the other grasped a pillow. When Jayden's parents came home, they found Taty in the same position and Jayden on his bed, one hand around his game controller, both sleeping peacefully.
