2. A parallel plate capacitor consisting of plates of area (a)&(b) (c)&(d) 0.020 m2 separated by an air gap of width 2.0 X 104 m is 8 l C C attached to a battery with an emf (voltage) 5 = 20 V. While 5 +- Kl the capacitor is still connected to the battery, a material with i |, dielectric constant K, = 2.0 is inserted between the plates, lling the entire space between the plates. (See figure.) (a) What is the capacitance of this capacitor with this inserted dielectric? b What are i the voltage across the capacitor and ii the char 'e on the positive plate of e g this capacitor with this inserted dielectric? With the dielectric inserted, the capacitor is carefully removed from the battery so no charge leaks from it. The plates are then pulled apart, doubling the space between the plates, so that the dielectric now only lls the top half of the space between the plates. (c) What is the new capacitance of the capacitor after the plates are pulled apart? (Hint: you can think of this system as a combination of two capacitors.) (d) How much work was required to pull the plates apart? (Hint: the work required to pull these apart is stored as additional energy in the capacitor.) (Show all work to receive full credit.)
