For the two following sets of conditions, sketch the position time graph. Briefly describe the motion of each graph. This one should be easy. . Let x = 5, v = 0 and a = 0. Neatly sketch a graph of the position time graph. Let x = -8, v = 0 and a = 0. Neatly sketch a graph of the position time graph. 2.) Run two simulations, one for each set conditions in #1 in the Introductions tab. Describe the motion of Moving Man for each set. If your graphs do not describe the motion, explain why. LaD Z: Motion In 1-Dimension Phys 1010 FA22 Introduction In this virtual lab, we are going to investigate motion using simulations. Scientists rely on simulations because, often-times, we do not have the capacity to investigate a system in real life. However, because scientists know the laws of physics, they can write programs that simulate the evolution of a system. For example, scientists can predict how an asteroid might travel through the solar system under the influence of the gravitational pull of the planets using Newton's Law of Gravity. They can use those simulations to determine the chances of an asteroid striking the earth. This lab will be an introduction to the software we will be using throughout the semester and give you some practice with predicting motion with zero acceleration. We'll have a second lab where we will let the acceleration be nonzero (after we have covered it in class). Objectives . Learn how to make a prediction and verify your prediction using a simulation. Learn how to run a simulation and compare it to your predictions. Draw a variety of position and velocity-time graphs. Software You will use the web-based app "Moving Man", created by the University of Colorado. It falls within a suite of educational apps called Physics Education Technology. You can find the links here https://phet.colorado.edu/. They have huge array of apps touching on many topics in mathematics, chemistry, and physics. We'll be using these applications throughout our virtual laboratories. You also may want to use an app for taking screenshots. While you can take pictures, screenshots are preferred for grading. Setting Up Verify that everyone can share screens and their mics are working. Write down everyone's names and email addresses. Please use your school issued accounts Go to https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/moving-man and bookmark it. Ready an app for taking screenshots, snips, or your camera. Instructions For our first experiment in motion, we will become familiar with how Moving Man works. Moving Man lets you simulate motion with constant velocity (no acceleration) or constant acceleration. It lets you change the position, velocity, and acceleration and simulates motion of an object in 1-dimension by moving the nichire of a man in N Go to the Introduction tab. You can change the position, velocity, and acceleration in one of two ways: either by moving the slider or by typing a number into the textbox. When you want to make Moving Man move, just hit the play button at the bottom. When you are done, hit the "Reset All" button at the bottom. First, let's change his position. First, move the Position slider until his position is 2. Mentally note what happens when you change the position. Then hit reset all and change the position in the textbox. Below, you will find a variety of scenarios. Each scenario gives you a set of values of position, velocity, and acceleration. You will first make a prediction and then check your prediction by running a simulation. You may put all of your work into this document. Below each set of instructions for each scenario is enough room for explanations and figures. For hand drawn graphs, please take a clear picture with your camera. For screenshots, you may insert the picture directly into the document. Submission Submit one lab report for your group. Remember to put everyone's name on it. You all will receive the same grade.
