Case study 2

You are the Lead Educator in the toddler room at XYZ Child Care Centre. At a recent staff meeting, several Educators shared examples of children's belongings going missing. Educators were encouraged to store belongings in children's lockers and encourage the children to assist where appropriate.

The Director also encouraged the staff to read part of the Personal Belonging Policy that states:

"We understand that a child may have an emotional attachment to a personal belonging from home, such as a toy or blanket and accept that this item may be instrumental to the child's feeling of emotional wellbeing and sense of belonging while in care in our service.

Centre Practice: We will;

  • We take as much care as possible in ensuring that personal belongings are returned to the correct family.
  • Request that parents clearly label all items with a permanent marker or label in order for staff to correctly identify your child's belongings and to ensure they are returned.
  • Encourage children who bring special belongings into care to place them in a special "toys from home" box to reduce the likelihood of their becoming lost or broken. However, we must make it clear that whilst all care is taken, XYZ Child Care Centre is not responsible for damaged, lost or stolen items.

You have volunteered to work on a written document (flyer/noticeboard item etc.) to share information to families to provide some strategies to keep their children's belongings from going missing.

Question:
