1. Throughout my time I've been on the internet I've enjoyed watching Ted Talks. Probably the reason behind this is that the presenters are always exceptionally prepared and have an active audience that they can engage with. These presenters are always knowledgeable in whatever they might be talking about and there's been an infinite variety of topics covered over the years that Ted Talks have existed.

When I saw the prompt for this assignment I knew there was only one YouTube channel I had to go to to find the perfect video. I looked through a couple different videos before finding a video that I really enjoyed. The speaker in the video is a well established composer Itay Talgam and he goes over the different ways composers will lead an orchestra.

He showed one composer that would just flow with the music and let the orchestra enact the music themselves. It's a way of the conductor showing trust in the orchestra to assume they know how to play the music together very well and he can just almost help them flow the music together. Then he would show another composer that would give cues on where to come in, would have very sharp movements almost to show the rhythm of the music which is very effective as well as you're showing them how to play the music directly.

The point of the Ted Talk was that there are different methods that can be used by a composer, but there isn't one finite perfect way to lead an orchestra. This has direct similarities with leading a business for example, you can be an innovator and do work on individual projects such as Elon Musk for example, or you could be a leader by being a marketing genius, Steve Jobs. The list goes on but there isn't a perfect way to lead a group of people and it's fascinating the many different ways people do lead.

Throughout this course, we have touched on a lot of leadership qualities, but we haven't touched a lot on leaders in a bad economy, that is why I chose the articleHow to be a Good Leader in a Bad Economy. This article is talking about a review that the writer did on an employer who might have tried a little too hard with their staff. They did some things right but also did some things wrong.

In this article, the leader was expecting an downturn in the economy and wanted to prepare their staff and company for this. This leader was working side by side with their staff to see how production was flowing. Were there things to change? Was there any underlying issues that have not been dug up yet? These were things that the leader was needing to solve and find out before the company falls into trouble. With all of the extra work these leaders were putting into the company, and working alongside of the employees, they were burning themselves out along with their staff. Usually when their is issues with a company or there is a downturn coming, they typically move closer with their staff. But don't you think this would be obvious to your staff? The extra control will start to worry them and make them more tired than before, and this is what happened. With the pandemic, and everyone working so independently, jumping at them with more push from their leader makes it harder.

Workloads also increase with a downturn in economy. Businesses want to get their work out before the downturn in the economy to try to maximize their profit before there could be no more profit. This is a huge amount of pressure on employees as well, since they are overloaded with tasks and no change in pay. Employees will start to think "I don't get paid enough". This could be a realistic thought as their workload can double, but their wage has not. Leaders in a bad economy need to stay calm, cool and collected. With encouragement and working in some extra tasks without throwing them at the staff will make all the difference.
