2. Sketch your predictions of the magnetic field lines. 3. Sketch your observations of the magnetic field created by the iron filings.8. Use your other hand to slowly sprinkle iron filings from the bag onto the paper. As you start to see magnetic field lines, stop sprinkling. Note: Too many shavings make the lines difficult to see. 9. Observe the iron filings with your eyes positioned level with the paper, so that you can see the magnet and the iron filings together. Sketch your observations in Post-Lab Question 3. Include the magnet in the sketch! 10. Once you have sketched the magnetic field lines, slowly lower the paper until it touches the magnet. Observe what happens to the filings. 11. Carefully pour the filings back into the bag. 12. Repeat Steps 6 - 11 with the magnet lying horizontally.1. Create a bar magnet by stacking four ceramic ring magnets to form a cylinder. 2. Lay the bar magnet down on a desk or table so that it rests on its rounded edge. 3. Hold the compass so that the face is parallel to the ground and face up. Move the compass around the magnet, toward and away from the magnet, and observe the behavior of the needle on the compass. Record your observations in Post-Lab Question 1. 4. Repeat Step 3 with the magnet standing vertical. Record your observations under Post- Lab Question 1. 5. Under Post-Lab Question 2, sketch out a prediction of what the magnetic field lines for your bar magnet look like. Include the magnet in the sketch. Hint: The compass is helpful to visualize the field lines. 6. If the paper you are using is flimsy, like printer or notebook paper, fold it in half so that the short edges touch. This makes the paper more stable when holding it with one hand. If the paper you are using is thick, like cardstock, do not fold it in half. 7. Hold the paper above the vertical magnet with one hand so that it is level (Figure 5)
