.2 TESTS, VARIABLES AND TYPES OF DATA
1.For the study described below, choose the appropriate test among the following four tests:
a) paired-samples t-test b) independent samples t-test c) repeated-measures ANOVA d) one way ANOVA.
Explain the reasons for the choice. In the explanation, please name:
i.both independent variable(s) and dependent variable(s), ii.what type of variables they are (categorical, continuous, or ratio) iii.what the levels of the independent variable(s) are iv.whether it is a between-groups or a repeated measures design
This study investigated whether teaching students the meaning of words increases the amount of words learnt while reading in a second language. Sixty high-school school students of English as a second language read a simplified short story by Roald Dahl. The story contained 16 low-frequency words, which were selected as target words. Students were randomly assigned to one of the two groups: one group read the story with glosses in the margins (Marginal Glosses group), and the other group received no additional information about the meaning of the target words (Control group). After reading the story, students were asked to write the meanings of the 16 target words in their first language. Students received one score for each word correctly defined. |
