2. The Application Model. The purpose of the application model is to define the major kinds of applications needed to manage the data and support the business functions of the enterprise. This model describes the standard interfaces, services, and applica- tions needed by the business. These translate into development resources for the project teams (e.g., component and code libraries, standards documents, design guidelines). The model describes the automated services that support the business processes and describes the interaction and interdependencies of the organization's applications. Also, it provides guidelines for developing new applications and moving to new application models. The application model also defines the applications needed to execute the business mission (i.e., topologies, develop- ment environments, APIs, security, network services, database management system services (DBMS), technical specifications, hardware tiers, operating systems, etc.). 3. The Device Model. This model defines the major kinds of equip- ment and devices needed to provide an environment for the applications managing the data. The device model includes: - Established standards and guidelines for the acquisition and deployment of client/workstation tools Design/implementation application building blocks, infra- structure services, network connectivity components, and platforms 2.
