2.2 Title: Asset Tracking and Management Using QR-coding 2.2.3 Problem Tracking and proper management of assets remains an important issue in most companies and organizations. An example is the library at the National University of Lesotho (NUL): Here library users (especially students) are required to register their laptops upon entry. When the student exits the library their laptop is checked against the manual register to see if the laptop belongs to the person in possession of such a laptop. This system uses the traditional pen and paper method. The motive behind this was to stop theft of students laptops by malicious people. The problem with this system is that it is: (1) time consuming: Students have to wait in long queues during peak hours to exit the library and that also causes commotion at the exit doors, (2) resource intensity: The current system requires a lot of resources in terms of paper and ink, (3) prone to human error: During peak hours the officers may clear false confirmation, that is, a malicious person could get away with a stolen machine, etc. 2.2.4 Project Task This project entails (among other things) developing a system that can be used to quickly register students laptops when they enter the library. For example: The system will register the laptop and the user of the laptop when entering the library and when exiting the laptop will be matched against the recorded entry. If the records match, then the holder is authenticated as the valid holder of the laptop. BUT: While adhering to addressing the highlighted problems in section 2.2.3, the system should be extended to address the following: General asset tracking in an organization, item identification, and other related activities. 2.2.5 Minimum specification Starting from scratch, you are required to formulate your own detailed specification and requirements for this project, while adhering to the general expected features of this project. That is, conduct a detailed requirements engineering process and present all identified requirements in a detailed system requirements document (SRD). The system must make use of Quick Response (QR) coding system (https://www.qr- code-generator.com/) for asset identification and tracking. Also check this resource: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_code. Design, develop, and implement asset tracking and management system. Document the entire project in a well-written formal report. Prepare a formal presentation and demonstration for this project. You must have power point slides for the presentation and have your system ready for demonstration during this session. You are free to use any programming languages and computing platforms of your choice. Have these well explained in the SRD document.
